Giving dignity to dying patients. In my applied psychology course at Cal State San Marcos, I choose to volunteer at Mission Hospice to fulfill the course's volunteer requirement. However, I choose to continue my volunteer work at Mission Hospice when the semester was over and it was no longer required of me. Mission Hospice's goal was to provide a positive impact for their patients and the patients' families. This included giving compassionate care, endless amount of attention, and always providing the best resources available for the patients.
As a volunteer, I am to help give dignity back to the patient and to help relieve stress from caregivers. In my psychology course, I was trained to use dignity therapy to create a legacy document for the patient's family. This involves interviewing the patient about his or her life, typing and printing the interview up, and giving it to family members so they may have a keepsake.
