Abstract: This paper is a review and application of research in fundamental attribution error and how addressing it could have a positive impact on decreasing toxic online behavior in video games. In this paper, I propose that if a ‘game as service’ can lower the likelihood of fundamental attribution error then they may reduce the toxic behavior that could potentially drive away a large portion of their player base and drive profits down. These companies could potentially utilize user experience design principals that focus on increasing a feeling of similarity among players in order to combat fundamental attribution error and cultivate a positive, cohesive community.
