The traditional clothing and culture of the Chinese immigrants in America during the Exclusion Era (1882-1943) is a multi faceted subject with many unexpected reverberations and connections to the history of immigration in the United States. Chinese clothing and culture helped to form immigrant identities, protect precious traditions and unite immigrant communities throughout the Exclusion Era. However, popular culture also butchered, derided, and manipulated Chinese culture in order to please the largely bigoted American audience at the time.
