My group members and I conducted a study in our Research Methods in Psychology class. We tested whether showing participants a criminals background would increase or decrease their negative judgments about the offender. We gave the participants ten statements. Five of those were regarding the publics views towards general crime or criminals. The other five were about specific statements regarding the offender we specified on. Our results were significant with items on the specific offender, meaning we saw an increase in negative judgment when presenting a violent background while we saw a decrease in negative judgments when presenting a poverty background.
